Q: My child is a picky eater. Which foods, besides candy, are bad for your teeth?
A: Eating habits, the type of foods and presence of bacteria in your mouth will determine what type of damage will occur in your child's teeth. Bacteria need sugar in order to survive and attack the teeth. Sugar can be found in milk, juice, fruits, honey, cereals and vegetables. Eating cheddar cheese after a sugary snack will reduce the likelihood for decay. The best thing is of course to brush the teeth right afterwards or reduce the frequency of sugary snacks. Limit soft drinks, sweetened iced tea and juices with a meal, as frequent sipping will cause more harm. Sticky foods (such as raisins and caramel) that contain sugar will linger around the teeth and will encourage tooth decay.
